This position will offer the opportunity to be part of a highly motivated team that works on the software that runs one of the largest distributed systems in the world. You will be an integral part of our aggressive growth strategy for creating highly innovative security products for the Internet scale, making our network and products faster, more reliable and secure. The data aspect of our security products is vast and varied presenting many challenges and opportunities for an exceptional data architect. As a Senior Data Architect, you will be responsible for:

  • Applying practical database architecture skills to current and next generation software services and applications

  • Creating new features from scratch, enhancing existing features and optimizing existing functionality, from conception and design through testing and deployment

  • Working with our development QA and system QA teams to come up with regression tests that cover new changes to our software

  • Working with our level 3 support team to troubleshoot complex problems on our network for our customers

  • Partnering with other teams inside the company such as the Threat Research, Data Science, Distributed Data Collection, Stability, QA, and many other groups

Akamai powers over 85% of the top online retailers and delivers somewhere between 15% to 30% of Internet traffic on any given day. Our team is part of the Security organization which is responsible for design and development of technology that helps customers to protect their web sites and secure the transactions over the web.

Our Bot Manager product is designed to provide superior cloud computing security, prevent data theft and downtime and mitigate large account takeover attempts. In addition, this group is building unique technology that can secure the cloud and make it a safe place to conduct billions of transactions daily and handle petabytes of data every day. Akamai has built a massive global distributed network that can solve problems at a scale that few others can approach. By leveraging our deployment of servers around the world, we can uniquely solve technology problems with innovative solutions that exceed the fundamental limitations of networking.


Required Education and Experience

Applicants must meet one of the following education and experience requirements:

  • 12 years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree or

  • 8 years of relevant experience and a Master’s degree or

  • 5 years of relevant experience and a PhD

Required Skills

  • 8+ years of experience with Oracle including logical and physical design, security, and performance

  • 5+ years of experience in the complete software development life cycle, from requirements to design, implementation, testing, and release

  • 5+ years of experience working in a Java/Linux server-side tech stack environment

Desired Skills

  • Experience working with development teams during the design phase of the micro-services SDLC - ensuring database standards are adhered to, proper schema design is implemented, data structures can scale as performance is maintained and the proper level of change management safeguards are in place

  • Capable of owning and driving the group’s database change management processes during releases

  • Experience supporting an organization’s operational data needs including but not limited to database refreshes in pre-production environments, automating the database state of pre-production systems used for testing, developing ad-hoc scripts to fix data related issues in production, troubleshooting performance issues, usage reporting, monitoring/alerting, and capacity planning

  • Capable of representing the business unit within the company's larger Data Architecture/DBA community and advocating for operational and environmental changes that will make our application development and operational activities easier

  • Solid understanding of the pros/cons of various NoSQL technologies in the data environment and how they fit into our future application and services designs

  • Solid understanding of connection pooling, transaction management, logging, and shell scripting

  • Extensive experience working on multiple projects at a time in a fast paced, results oriented environment

  • Security domain knowledge

  • Background in Data Science, Machine Learning, Math and Statistics
